Acceptable use policy

An acceptable use policy is a policy governing the use of something, specifying what is and is not acceptable in relation to that something.

Acceptable use policies are commonly used in relation to websites or particular aspects of a website - for example, the use of an internet forum or a blog comment feature may be subject to an acceptable use policy. Such a policy might prohibit the publication of unlawful and offensive material. Acceptable use policies may go into considerable detail in specifying the types of material that are prohibited. They may also specify the consequences of a user breaching the terms of the policy.

Another common but different function of an acceptable use policy is to specify in general terms the kinds of use of an internet connection that may be made by employees, contractors or others.

Acceptable use policies are sometimes called "acceptable usage policies" or more simply "AUPs".
